Brown coal

**Includes:** - Coals with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) less than 24 MJ/ kg and a Vitrinite mean Random Reflectance less than 0.6 per cent. Brown coal comprises: • sub-bituminous coal, i.e. brown coal with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) equal to or greater than 20 MJ/kg but less than 24 MJ/kg • lignite, i.e. brown coal with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) less than 20 MJ/kg
