**Includes:** - liquid biofuels derived from biomass and used in diesel engines These biofuels can be produced by: • chemical modification: producing a linear alkyl ester through transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats with methanol • thermal processes, such as: • gasification followed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis • pyrolysis followed by hydrogenation • conversion of sugar to hydrocarbons using microorganisms (e.g. yeast)
